Swatch watches rescued the Swiss watchmaking industry in the 1970s when Lebanese business man Nicolas G. Hayek proposed that watchmaking companies should no longer focus on watches that would last a lifetime, but instead offer customers "a second watch". Since then the Swatch watch has been regarded as one of the world's best known brands – not just in the watchmaking industry. Swatch watches have become icons and are now sold all over the world.
