Tom Dixon

Tom Dixon (1959) was born in Tunisia, and when he was four years old, the family moved to England. Tom Dixon has no formal design education.

It all started rather by chance when as a bas guitarist in a disco band he was involved in an accident and had to find a new career. He decided to spend his time repairing his motorbike and he realised that he really enjoyed welding things together. This made him want to explore metals and welding methods. In 1998, he got a job with the English furniture chain Habitat which allowed him to specialise in metals. Self-taught is not the word if you ask the man himself. Tom Dixon thinks of the years with Habitat as his apprenticeship. In 2002, he established his own design company "Tom Dixon" in partnership with David Begg, and the brand quickly gained success because of its distinctive raw look and materials. The collections include furniture, accessories and lighting. Tom Dixon holds an Honorary Doctorate from Birmingham City University, and in 2000, he received an OBE award for his contribution to British design.
